‘American Idol’ and ‘GLEE’ post strong Tuesday performance on FOX

Once again the Top 9 performed on AMERICAN IDOL and posted a 7.3 among Adults 18-49 and dominated its 8-9:30p time period among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Teens and all key demos.  AMERICAN IDOL posted the same rating as last week among Adults 18-49 and gained +2% in both Adults 18-34 (5.6 vs. 5.5) and Teens (4.5 vs. 4.4).  In the 8-9:30p time period AMERICAN IDOL showed advantages over its nearest competitors of +135% among Adults 18-49 (7.3 vs. 3.1 for ABC and NBC), +124% among Adults 18-34 (5.6 vs. 2.5 for ABC), +246% among Teens (4.5 vs. 1.3 for ABC) and +70% in Total Viewers (20.6 vs. 12.1 Mil for ABC.) 


Last night’s AMERICAN IDOL performance show outperformed ABC’s Dancing With The Stars’ performance show on Monday among Adults 18-49 rating (+49%, 7.3 vs. 4.9) and in Total Viewers (20.640 vs. 20.562 Mil.)  So far this season, AMERICAN IDOL’s average is on par with the same weeks last year with Most Current ratings vs. comparable Most Current, showing 93% retention among Adults 18-49 (9.2/24 vs. 9.9/25), 94% among Adults 18-34 (7.7/22 vs. 8.2/23), 96% among Teens (6.4/21 vs. 6.7/21) and 94% in Total Viewers (24.9 vs. 26.4 Mil.)

Airing from 9:28-10:30p, the return of GLEE posted a 5.6 rating Adults 18-49 and achieved its highest rated telecast to date among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34 and all key demos.  GLEE outperformed its prior season originals average (Wed 9p) by +70% among Adults 18-49 (5.6 vs. 3.3), +61% among Adults 18-34 (5.8 vs. 3.6), +67% among Teens (4.0 vs. 2.4) and +88% among Total Viewers (13.7 vs. 7.3 Mil.)  Compared to its post-AMERICAN IDOL series debut on 5/19/09 GLEE showed impressive gains, including +44% among Adults 18-49 (5.6 vs. 3.9), +76% among Adults 18-34 (5.8 vs. 3.3), +33% among Teens (4.0 vs. 3.0) and +43% among Total Viewers (13.7 vs. 9.6 Mil.)  GLEE posted the highest rated telecast of any new show this season among Adults 18-49 (excluding the post-Super Bowl telecast of CBS’ Undercover Boss).
 
Airing in the post-AMERICAN IDOL time slot, GLEE displayed stronger retention out of AMERICAN IDOL than its series debut last year (5/19/09) among Adults 18-49 (77% vs. 45%), Adults 18-34 (104% vs. 51%), Teens (89% vs. 58%) and Total Viewers (67% vs. 40%).  GLEE shows the strongest retention among Adults 18-49 (77%) of any program coming out of AMERICAN IDOL in over two years (since 2/5/08, HOUSE).   Last night’s GLEE is the highest rated post-AMERICAN IDOL telecast among Adults 18-49 in over two years (since 3/5/08, MOMENT OF TRUTH).
Showing its strength against original competition for the night, GLEE outperformed ABC’s Lost by +47% among Adults 18-49 (5.6 vs. 3.8), +61% among Adults A18-34 (5.8 vs. 3.6), and +44% among Total Viewers (13.7 vs. 9.5).

FOX won the night among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Teens and all key demos.  In fact, FOX outperformed its nearest competition for the night by +120% (6.6/18 vs. 3.0/8 for NBC), +138% among Adults 18-34 (5.7/17 vs. 2.4/7 for ABC), +258% among Teens (4.3/15 vs. 1.2/4 for ABC) and +84% in Total Viewers (17.8 vs. 9.7 for CBS).

Competition
The following are standard, non-Time Zone Adjusted Fast Nationals for ABC, CBS, NBC and CW.

ABC’s Dancing With The Stars results show (2.7/8) matched its prior average this spring, which is down -18% from its comparable Tuesday average last year (3.3/8).  At 9p, Lost (3.8/10) matched its lowest original rating ever (excluding clip shows), down -16% from its season average (4.5/11) and at 10p, new drama V (2.3/6) also delivered its lowest rating to date (excluding clipshows), falling -12% from its regular spring average (2.6/7) and showing week-to-week losses with every episode since its recent premiere (2.8/8 > 2.4/7 > 2.3/6).

CBS aired repeats of NCIS (1.9/6), NCIS: LA (1.9/5) and The Good Wife (1.4/4).

NBC’s The Biggest Loser 9 (3.3/9) and Parenthood (2.5/7) were both about average.

On the CW, 90210 (0.7/2) matched its lowest original ever and the season finale of Melrose Place (0.5/1) finished -29% below its prior average with first-run episodes (0.7/2).
