Bart Ritner dead at 76

Long time North Carolina radio personality Bart Ritner died of complications from cancer on Wednesday, December 28th. He was 76 and had retired from WPTF-AM Raleigh in 2005.


Harry Barclay Ritner Jr. began his career in broadcasting began while attending East Carolina University. In Greenville, he worked as cameraman and director for WNCT-TV’s local news. After college, Ritner returned to Rocky Mount, joined WCEC-AM, and discovered his true love and talent, behind the microphone.

After working in smaller markets for 10 years Ritner made his big move to WRAL-FM Raleigh and then to the market’s News/Talk powerhouse, WPTF. After 39 years on the air at WPTF, Ritner retired and worked in public relations for the Aluminum Company of North Carolina.

The funeral service for Bart Ritner was Friday, December 30th. In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to support the North Carolina Wildlife Federation.
