How Many Stations Billed $50M+ In 2016?

The answer to this question: two.

To the surprise of no one in the radio industry, Hubbard Radio‘s all-News WTOP-FM 103.5 in Washington, D.C. is the No. 1-billing radio station in 2016, according to just-released data from BIA/Kelsey.

WTOP, in the nation’s seventh-ranked market, has been the industry leader for several years–thanks to not only the station’s “top” ratings but also due to its multiplatform advertising opportunities. In 2016, WTOP’s revenue came in at $67.5 million.

Just behind it is the only other radio station to surpass $50 million in billing: iHeartRadio‘s CHR/Pop KIIS-FM 102.7 in Los Angeles. The station known as the home of Ryan Seacrest and the originator of the Wango Tango concert raked in $65.9 million in total revenue in 2016.

The remainder of the top 10 featured stations largely between $40 million and $48 million in billing.

All of these stations are owned by two companies: iHeart and CBS Radio (although BIA/Kelsey already shows them as owned by Entercom).

Aside, from the nation’s No. 5 biller — WBBM-AM 780 in Chicago — eight of the nation’s top 10 billers are either in New York or L.A.
