The general election is a long ways off, but groups looking to install a Democrat into the California Governor’s Mansion are already taking aim at leading Republican candidate Meg Whitman. A new group called Level the Playing Field 2010 is using radio to start taking her down a few pegs even before she faces off in a primary with Republican Steve Poizner.

According to Politico.com, the group is planning to drop $50K weekly into radio to keep the heat on Whitman, who has said she is willing to spend up to $150M of her own money on her campaign.

LPF2010 was created by friends of likely Democratic candidate Jerry Brown, who will be trying for his second tilt at the job. It is aiming to raise $20M-$30M and add TV into the mix beginning next month.
