Super Bowl XLIV Delivers More Than 106 Million Viewers, Making it the Most-Watched Broadcast in Television History


“Undercover Boss” is the Biggest Series Premiere Since 1987; Attracts Largest Audience Ever for a New Series Following the Super Bowl 

CBS’s Weekly Audience is its Largest Since 1994 and Highest in Key Demos Since 2004

CBS had a record-shattering week as SUPER BOWL XLIV became the most- watched broadcast in television history and the post-Super Bowl premiere of UNDERCOVER BOSS delivered the largest audience for a series debut since 1987, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending Feb. 7, week 20 of the 2009-2010 television season.

With an average audience of 106.5 million, SUPER BOWL XLIV surpassed 1983’s season finale of M*A*S*H as the most-watched broadcast in television history. 

The premiere of the new reality series, UNDERCOVER BOSS, attracted 38.65 million viewers, the largest audience for any series premiere since “Dolly” on Sept. 27, 1987; it was the largest audience ever for a new series following the Super Bowl and the most-watched reality series premiere ever.

For the week, CBS was first in households, viewers and adults 25-54 and adults 18-49, with the network’s largest audience since the week ending Feb. 27, 1994, and best households, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 deliveries since the week ending Feb.1, 2004.
 
For the week in viewers:  CBS (26.18m), FOX (9.10m), ABC (7.00m) and NBC (4.74m).  Season-to-date, CBS is first in viewers (12.56m), ahead of FOX (9.87m), ABC (8.77m) and NBC (7.48m). 

For the week in households:  CBS (13.0/21), FOX (5.2/08), ABC (4.4/07) and  NBC (3.1/05).  In households, season-to-date, CBS is first (7.6/12), ahead of FOX (5.8/09), ABC (5.5/09) and NBC (4.7/08). 
 
For the week in key demographics, CBS was first in adults 25-54 (9.5/23) and adults 18-49 (8.5/22).   Season-to-date, CBS is first in adults 25-54 (4.3/11) and second in adults 18-49 (3.4/09).
 
SUPER SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS:
 
CBS’s Super Bowl Sunday package from 7:00-11:00 PM — featuring SUPER BOWL XLIV, SUPER BOWL XLIV POST GAME SHOW and UNDERCOVER — dominated Sunday night in households (39.3/60), viewers (91.93m), adults 25-54 (35.4/67), men 25-54 (38.7/71), adults 18-49 (34.0/68), men 18-49 (36.8/72), adults 18-34 (31.5/68) and men 18-34 (33.1/71).  This was the largest viewers delivery for any network on any night since the advent of people meters.  
 
According to Nielsen Media Research, approximately 153.4 million viewers watched all or part of SUPER BOWL XLIV, and 54.6 million watched all or part of UNDERCOVER BOSS’s series premiere.
 
SUPER BOWL XLIV (S) posted a 45.0/68 in households, 40.5/75 in adults 25-54, 44.6/79 in men 25-54, 38.6/75 in adults 18-49, 42.1/80 in men 18-49, 35.5/75 in adults 18-34 and 37.6/79 in men 18-34.  SUPER BOWL XLIV averaged 106.48m viewers throughout the broadcast, the largest audience ever for a broadcast, passing M*A*S*H’s 105.97m viewers in February 1983.
 
This was the best viewers delivery ever for the Super Bowl.  SUPER BOWL XLIV delivered the best household and adults 25-54 deliveries for a Super Bowl since January 28, 1996 (NBC, Dallas Cowboys defeat Pittsburgh Steelers), adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 since January 25, 1998 (NBC, Denver Broncos defeat Green Bay Packers) and in men 25-54 and men 18-49 since January 30, 2000 (ABC, St. Louis Rams defeat Tennessee Titans). 
 
Compared to last year’s Super Bowl (Pittsburgh Steelers defeat Arizona Cardinals), CBS was up +7% in both households (from 42.0/64) and men 25-54 (from 41.5/76), +8% in adults 25-54 (from 37.5/71), +5% in adults 18-49 (from 36.7/72), +3% in adults 18-34 (from 34.3/73), +4% in men 18-49 (from 40.4/77), on par in men 18-34 (from 37.8/77) and added +7.74m viewers (from 98.74m, +8%). 
 
From 9:00-9:30 PM, SUPER BOWL XLIV delivered its best half-hour in households (48.5/70), viewers (114.13m), adults 25-54 (43.6/76), men 25-54 (47.9/80), adults 18-49 (42.0/76), men 18-49 (45.6/81), adults 18-34 (39.1/76) and men 18-34 (41.3/80).
 
SUPER BOWL XLIV POST GAME SHOW (S) (33.0/51, 75.47m) demographics:  29.8/58 in adults 25-54, 32.0/61 in men 25-54, 29.1/59 in adults 18-49, 30.8/62 in men 18-49, 27.5/60 in adults 18-34 and 28.4/63 in men 18-34. 
 
UNDERCOVER BOSS (P) from 10:13-11:13 PM posted a 19.1/32 with an average of 38.65m viewers, 16.6/37 in adults 25-54, 16.2/38 in adults 18-49 and 15.2/39 in adults 18-34.  UNDERCOVER BOSS posted the largest audience for any post-Super Bowl program since 2001’s SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK premiere, the best households, adults 25-54, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 performances since 2006’s “Grey’s Anatomy”.  

Since the advent of people meters, UNDERCOVER BOSS delivered the third- largest post-Super Bowl audience behind a “Friends Special” on January 28, 1996, and SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK in 2001.  UNDERCOVER BOSS posted the largest post-Super Bowl audience of any new series.
 
UNDERCOVER BOSS delivered the largest audience for an entertainment program this season and best ratings in households, adults 25-54, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34.  UNDERCOVER BOSS delivered the largest audience ever for a premiere broadcast of a reality series and the largest audience for any series premiere since “Dolly” on Sept. 27, 1987.

SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS (S) was first in households (6.8/11), viewers (10.99m), adults 25-54 (3.9/10) and adults 18-49 (2.9/09).  Compared to last year’s special (on Jan. 31, 2009), CBS was up +48% in households (from 4.6/08), +50% in adults 25-54 (from 2.6/08), +45% in adults 18-49 (from 2.0/07) and added +3.09m viewers (from 7.90m, +39%).  SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS posted its best household ratings ever, largest audience since 2004, and its best delivery in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since 2007.
