Commerce Committee Senator battling cancer

A bleeding ulcer checked out by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has turned out to be cancerous, and will require chemotherapy. Lautenberg is expected to continue his work on Capitol Hill in between treatments. He is a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Lautenberg’s presence on the first Capitol Hill stop for broadcast legislation is key for his constituents. Many residents of his state feel like second-class citizens when in comes to broadcasting, since many are living in suburbs of New York City or Philadelphia, neither of which is in New Jersey. Life between the two major cities has also left the state of New Jersey with mostly lower powered stations.

Even though Lautenberg is the second-oldest Senator, behind Robert Byrd (D-WV) at age 86, doctors say his condition is treatable.
