Disney is leader in Q2 earnings

DisneyWhether measuring by net income or operating income, the biggest critter in the media universe is a mouse – but what’s really notable in the latest SNL rankings is the absence of a company which is generally a fixture on the net income chart.

When it comes to net income in particular, Disney brought in two times the Q2 revenue of the second highest company, growing 22.4% to $2.036B. Despite a robust quarter in which it gained 63.5%, that surge “only”took #2 Thomson-Reuters to $935M, less than half the Disney haul.

Disney was also on top of the operating income chart, beating #2 News Corp. $11.088B to $8.37B.

According to Kagan, News Corp. commonly holds the #2 slot on both charts, but during Q2 2012 it not only fell out of the #2 hole, if fell off the Top 25 chart completely.

“For the June quarter,” explained Kagan, “News Corp. reported a net loss attributable to company shareholders of $1.55 billion, compared to net income of $683 million in the year-ago period. The quarterly results included a $2.9 billion pretax impairment and restructuring charge primarily related to the company’s publishing businesses, as well as $15 million of pretax loss that included the impact of a property sale in the U.K.”

According to Kagan, the upcoming separation of print from other News Corporation properties is seen as a positive, and the company’s cable and motion picture prospects for 2013 are seen positively, with the result being no major loss of investors due to the pothole in net income results.

The lists are heavy on companies with television-related properties. Each chart includes only one radio-heavy company each – on net income, it is Radio One, and for operating income, it’s Clear Channel.

Here are the top 25 in each category:
