Emmis, Saga Swim Above Media’s Red Tide

These are exciting times for radio broadcasting companies. With Entercom head David Field emerging as the industry’s biggest cheerleader and advocate and marketers rediscovering the power of AM and FM radio — thanks, in part, to the potential recapturing of the home through smart speakers, 2018 looks to be a pivotal year for growth.

Unfortunately, the two biggest radio companies by number of stations continue to struggle with severe debt issues, and that’s unfairly clouded the entire industry. Most radio companies were down in Thursday’s trading. Four radio companies were up following Thursday’s Closing Bell — and that shows savvy among some investors.

Emmis Communications was one gainer on Thursday, rising by 2 cents as of 12:45pm Eastern, to $3.65.

That’s a new high year-to-date for Emmis shares, as the company’s current market cap is $46.27 million.

As of 2:12pm Eastern, Saga Communications was up 5 cents, to $45.55.

But, as of 3:51pm Eastern, the company fell into the red, losing 35 cents, to $45.15.

At the Closing Bell, Saga found itself with a gain of 15 cents, to $45.65.

It’s good news for the radio industry pure-play, and bring Saga shares back to where they were until the end of May. With a market cap of $269.66 million, Saga has been one of the most solid companies for Wall Street investors.

Meanwhile, Salem Media Group saw a much-needed boost in its stock price, rising 5 cents to $4.80.

Also up: Entravision, which gained 3 cents, to $7.03.

Key decliners include Entercom, off 53 cents to $11.57.
