George W. BushPres. Bush presses for corporate clean-up

President George W. Bush used his Saturday (7/13) radio address to try to position himself as leading the fight for cleaning up Wall Street, even as both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill were pressing for even stronger measures than those proposed by the President.

"As part of this crackdown, I support the creation of a strong, independent board that will provide effective oversight of the accounting profession," Bush said. "This board would have the ability to monitor, investigate and enforce high ethical principles by punishing individual offenders."

After seeing Wall Street suffer one of its worst weeks ever, the President noted the need to restore confidence in the financial markets. "Perhaps the greatest need for our economy at this moment is restoring confidence in the integrity of the American business leaders," he said.
