Air America yanked off the air in Chicago, LA
Just two weeks after launch, the new liberal talk network Air America has been yanked in LA (KBLA-AM) and Chicago (WNTD-AM) and replaced by Spanish programming at the affiliates owned by Arthur Liu's Multicultural Broadcasting. Rumor has it that Air America hasn't paid its bills on time, at least that's what arch nemesis Rush Limbaugh said yesterday, including saying that the net was already in financial trouble.
However, in a statement confirming the move by Multicultural, Air America Chairman Evan Cohen called it a drastic measure in the midst of negotiations: "Air America Radio is temporarily unable to be heard on WNTD in Chicago and KBLA in Los Angeles, but Chicago and Los Angeles listeners can still hear our broadcast on the web at airamericaradio.com and on XM Satellite Radio (channel 167). MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting's conduct in this matter has been disgraceful. To shut off a broadcast that listeners rely on without warning and in the middle of discussions is the height of irresponsibility and a slap in the face of the media industry. In addition, it is a clear violation of their contractual obligations, and we are seeking legal remedies against them in court."
So far, that is manifested in a filing for a temporary restraining order to put its programming back on WNTD.
WNTD's main line answers with a recording that begins, "We are not answering calls for Air America at this time. If you know your party's extension, you may leave a message at this time. We look forward to serving you again soon."
Meanwhile, Air America continues to add affiliates (up to 18 now), in Sacramento, West Palm Beach, Colorado Springs, Portland, ME, Burlington-Plattsburgh and Santa Clara, CA. That brings the total to 16 (14 if you subtract LA and Chicago).
