Daughter settling in down the street from dad

Dana Christian Raymant is entering the Joplin MO-Pittsburg KS television market with a $1M deal for an unbuilt television station. She will be getting the CP for KFJX-TV, which is scheduled to enter the market from the Pittsburg wing on channel 14.

Davis Television Pittsburg is selling its stock in the CP, and will receive $543,512.50 of the proceeds. The remaining $456,487.50 will go to Anthony J. Fant to pay off the settlement which gave Davis the CP in the first place.

While the names Dana and Raymant may not ring any bells, many of you are no doubt familiar with the name Christian, as in Ed Christian of Saga Communications (A:SGA).

Ed Christian made this deal possible, but not in the usual way. In this case, he provided the buyer with her initial entry into the world by virtue of being her father. Nevertheless, the daughter and father have no interests in one another's business ventures.

Saga does, however, have a television station in the Joplin-Pittsburgh market. It's CBS-affiliated KOAM hails from channel 7, also out of Pittsburg.

This is not the first time that Dana has surfaced as an owner in one of her father's markets. The following is from an RBR series on insider deals made by radio companies which we ran earlier this summer (RBR Daily Morning Epaper, 7/15). "Saga also loaned (Ed) Christian $125K in 1999 at 7% interest, which he in turn loaned to his daughter's company, Surtsey Productions, to buy KVCT-TV Victoria TX. Saga is prohibited from owning the station directly, but has a JSA agreement with it that runs for 16 years. The loan has been repaid and Saga is continuing to make JSA payments to the daughter's company. Surtsey also leases office space from Saga and receives payments from Saga stations for its graphics design services."
