Heat poured on in nine senate races
The Senate is up for grabs, and nine races appear to be going down to the wire, pulling in national advertising dollars, and in some cases, cash infusions from the candidates themselves. State still in play, according to a report in USA Today, include Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and South Dakota. The latter state, one of the smallest in the USA in terms of population, has attracted the most money of any congressional race, according to the Associated Press. Republicans are trying to unseat Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, attempting to replace him with former Rep. John Thune. AP says between them, the two candidates have spent over 26M dollars.
Emap could launch Scottish Radio bid this week
UK media group Emap, owner of Kiss and Magic radio stations, is expected to launch its takeover bid for Scottish Radio Holdings' 22 radio stations and 43 local papers this week. Emap, which already owns a 28% share in the Glasgow-based company, is preparing to take the remaining stake after reshuffling senior radio execs, reported Brand Republic/MediaBulletin.
Emap recently promoted Shaun Gregory to the role of managing director of national brands, while current managing director of radio programming Mark Story is handing over responsibility of Kiss FM and Magic to Gregory, indicating he will be involved in sealing the deal and looking after the new stations should the bid be accepted. Travis Baxter was promoted managing director of Big City, taking on the role of managing director of Emap's eight Big City stations across the north of England.
The takeover is seen as a good move for Emap because there is no geographical overlap between SRH's radio stations, including Radio Clyde and Radio Forth, and Emap's London, Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle-based interests.
KSJO-FM becomes "La Preciosa"
On 10/28, as part of its new Spanish language format initiative (9/16 RBR Daily Epaper #181), CC Radio flipped heritage rocker KSJO-FM to a new Spanish-language format, "La Preciosa." Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" was the station's last song in the old format. La Preciosa will feature "El Genio Lucas," airing Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., hosted by Alex Lucas. "La Preciosa" will also air the widest catalog of Regional Mexican hot hits, appealing adult 25-54 listeners.
KSJO is the second under CC Radio's initiative (headed by Alfredo Alonso) to flip to a Spanish-language format. The first to flip on 9/16 was Atlanta's WWVA-FM "Viva."
