The second stage of the FCC’s reverse auction concluded with Round 53 on Thursday morning, and wireless companies such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon have a new target of $54.59 billion to clear as they seek to obtain spectrum from television broadcasters.

The new target is $33.8 billion lower than the forward auction’s first stage, and the new clearing target is 114 MHz.

The forward auction’s second stage is now set to begin Wednesday morning, with an official bidding schedule expected from the FCC on Oct. 14.

Strategy& principal Dan Hays believes the new target is still too high, thus setting the stage for a third round – and likely fourth round – in the forward auction.
