Michael Savage: Straight talk, unfiltered

Talk Radio Network’s Michael Savage is no stranger to controversy and headlines. However, his show and audience just keep on growing. Why? Because he says what’s in his heart—right or wrong in the eyes of his listeners. He’s beholden to nothing and no one. And he’s definitely not afraid of a fight—enough so that he will put his own money where his mouth is.

Savage is great, compelling radio and his show is indicative of the power of radio. Yes, Savage is an entertainer (he can be hilarious without even trying), but he’s also an author and a bit of an activist as well—in things he really believes in. Of course, his audience backs him up.

He earned his PhD from The University of California at Berkeley and is the author of four best-selling books—a radio record! Liberal San Franciscans lock ears to their radios when Savage is live because they love his educated opinions and machine-gun wit.

We caught up with Michael recently and asked for his take on a lot of things—including what makes his show so successful.

What's unique about The Savage Nation?

The Savage Nation is the only show in the country where you can get away from the inside the beltway claptrap that you hear everywhere. Everywhere you turn on the dial it's Obama this, McCain that. The cable networks refuse to talk about anything else because they're schilling for ad money from the candidates. Most radio shows blindly follow the lead of the cable networks, so the government media complex wins, the people lose, and we end up missing the real news. I'd rather talk about almost anything else - my dog, going to a restaurant, taking a walk – because these things ultimately have more political meaning than anything you'll hear on these other shows. A walk through San Francisco becomes a treatise on the dangers of liberalism, a restaurant story becomes a metaphor for frustration with the Republican party, and talking about my dog turns into a parable about dealing with terrorism. No one else engages the radio listener on this level.

What does your recent victory in the Chessani case say about the power of radio?

When I gave $25,000 of my own money to Lt. Col Chessani and my audience raised over $200,000, we knew we were fighting an uphill battle. The military had 65 agents working to prove that Chessani had been responsible for covering-up what Rep. John Murtha falsely labeled a "massacre". When the judge dismissed the case last month, it proved that talk radio has the power to change the outcome of critical political events. After all, it was The Savage Nation that was key in stopping the Dubai Ports deal, blocking the nomination of Harriet Meiers to the Supreme Court, and killing the Amnesty bill. Those who ignore talk radio do so at their own risk.

What are the three most pressing problems we face as Americans today?

We have the enemy without in the form of Iran and its Islamofacsist minions, the enemy within the form of rampant, insane liberalism destroying our culture, and a total lack of leadership that's willing to deal with the other two. Let's start with the enemy without. I've said time and again that the leader of Iran, Ahmadinejad, is the new Hitler. He's on the record denying the Holocaust and saying he wants to wipe Israel of the face of the earth. Yet Obama wants to sit down and talk with this despot and Bush and McCain refuse to do anything but issue warnings. If we don't take care of Iran, they will take care of us. As far as liberalism in the United States goes, all you need to do is look at the recent Supreme Court decision on child rape. What sane society would punish such vile psychopaths with anything less than death? Liberalism has ripped apart the mental and moral fabric of our nation and must be stopped. And as far as leadership goes, Bush has been a zero; McCain looks to be more of the same, and Obama is even worse. None of them have the guts to stand up to Iran, none of them have the guts to stand up to the ACLU, none of them have the guts to stand up to those who put the bottom line before the flag. The most important thing about our president is not their sex or race as the liberals insist. I would vote for a black woman for president if she would close the borders, destroy our enemies, and jail the traitors who are eating away at our nation from the inside.

What are your predictions for the Mideast? What are your fears?

Until we act decisively in the Middle East, Iran will grow stronger. As soon as we show them that we are willing to unleash our military might against them, they'll back down and our problems will be over. My fear is that no real leader will appear who is willing to do this.

What can radio do to regain some of what it has lost, especially with younger demos?

Americans, especially younger Americans, are sick of Beltway Blather from talk show hosts. Men and women in their twenties call my show all the time because I present political and social issues to them in a way that is real to them. This is what talk radio has to do. Young people today are breaking their backs to support the idiocy that a generation of their liberal elders are foisted upon them. They don't have the time or the interest for horserace politics of the sort most hosts engage in. They want someone who isn't afraid to tell the truth and someone who has lived and worked and struggled in the real world, not someone whose entire career has played out in an air conditioned studio in Manhattan.

What commentary do you have on the state of America's news media?

The liberal media in this country is probably more responsible than any other group for our nation's cultural decline. For thirty years, they've been feeding us a steady diet of leftism that has transformed a once great nation into a country more concerned with Montezuma's Revenge than The Halls of Montezuma. The news media has convinced and entire generation that self-esteem is more important than national pride. Even the so-called "conservative" media outlets give us nothing but globalism and depravity. So we have a nation filled with metrosexual men, women of ill repute, and children that know more about how to put a condom on a cucumber than they do about the Constitution.

What books do you still have to write?

I'm currently editing a collection of stories from my life, many of which I've spoken  on the air about.  It will be finished later this year and be made available on my website.

Dear Dr. Savage,
I am very worried about what is going on in our U.S.A. these days. I am sickened by the Homeland Security report that lumps all conservatives with right wing extremists. I need to know what to do. What can an honest American do about the things our Government is doing in our name. I know there are at least 50 million americans who feel as I do, who are conservatives, who are not right wing extremist, who believe in states rights, who believe in our right to bear arms, who want our borders controlled, who want illegal aliens kept out. I believe that something should be done. Please e-mail me and give me a reasonable plan. I will gladly give of myself in any way I can to help true Americans to take back our country before it is to late.
I am 56 years old, I served in the Navy '71 to '75. I am medically Retired from same. Even though I am 40% disabled, I have always been employed and able to support myself and my family. Except for 12 weeks of benifits in 1980 and being on unemployment in 2005, I have always been able to find work and always will. i just need to be able to do something to help get our country back on track to where we should be. Please help me. Please give me hope that it is not already to late.

God bless you Dr. Savage and the messages you deliver. I must say, the very best moment of your programs was reciently, when your wife was on the show. She said, "There's no one better than you Michael". She's a good woman. Take care of her.
God bless our constitution, and God bless America.

I hope Mr Savage can help my family learn about what happened to my brother who was murdered in 2005 in Durham NC. The government have denied hundreds of FOIA requests, and is covering up a lot of things, such as the manner of death, and that they took his body parts, and we believe his remains are one of the many found in the freezers of Philip Guyett, currently facing charges in June for sending body parts through the mail, and only being charged with mail fraud?!

WHY WOULD THEY AFTER YOU HAVE "SAVAGED" THEM IN SPEECH & WRITTEN WORD.

IF YOU TAKE ALL OF THE TALKSHOW HOST COMBINED YOU WOULD BE LUCKY TO

Hi Michael,

I just came from my investment club meeting. This club is a group of busineemen, accountants and lawyers. Basically the subject of Cap and Trade came up in discussion and to my surprise the lawyers all thought it was good and will cure what ills the USA. As for government they thgought it was the only way to go. Their reasoning is that George Bush brought us to our knees and without Obama's several trillion dollars we would wbe in a depression that would never end. My question is how f'en dumb can "educated" people be? The system has been verygood to the whole group, the average annual income is $200,000 plus. Where have I gone wrong to think that Obama has take our freedom and we will never be able to recover. We have lost our borders, and the lawyers think we have not; We are losing pour culture and no one seems to care. fior sure our language will very soon be gone as close to 60% can not speak english.

Michael, I listen to your show each night as I drive home. What you say is absolutely correct. I am a first generation usa american. My grandfather and father imigrated through Ellis Island. My dad would not allow German in the house. he believed that the USA were his salvationand he worked toward to educating us and making us self sufficient and all seven of us have met and are still following our dream. All of us except one are self employed and built businesses or are have accumulated enough farm land to be self sufficient. I am a CPA and have 5 employees. But I see that what I have will soon go away and will be used by those who are non-doers. I'm sick about it but I still get up each day and try to preach the good word of nationalism and freedom.

Many people just don't see that they are better off as we are on our own without government than with the overbearing Federal Government.

Keep up your program, tell me what else I can do besides buy more guns and ammunition. Of coarse it goes without saying that one must purchase from shows that do not keep records or the Feds will be in just like that are doing in Houston right now.

You are a voice crying in the wilderness. Just remember I am hearing you please keep doing the right thing.

thank you,

I listen daily as I do charts at night.
Here in Kansas City,MO there is a group of we conservative who have gotten together and are having a training conference on how to become involved in the conservative movement. My husband and I own a priviate medical practice here in Kansas City. There are physicans who are letting some of their staff go because they see the "hand writing on the wall" as to where medicine is going if we have Oboma care. This is unheard of in the medical profession. We will not have the advancement of research or technology. My husband and I will most likely leave medicine as well as others
who are wonderful physicians. I would like an opportunity to talk with some one about this. 816-746-1833 Thank You.

Is there a coservative group that monitors our elected officials that can answer questions on the tracking of the decisions being made by elected officials? I think it is about time we hold elected officials accountable on the issues they vote on. Why can't the leaders of the conservative movement gather their resources and get some "mainstream" air time and spread the information to the people who do not listen to talk radio? There is education and information that a lot of people do not get. We sure are limiting ourselves on any attempt to get this across to potential conservative prospects. THIS IS A WAR!!

Mr. Savage,
I looked on your web site where I can email you but if that area is there, I have yet to find it. So, I just stuck my comments here.
I have heard you crying the other day about the other talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, who don't support your fight with the British.
You said they are only in this business for them selves.
Going back a few months, I remember hearing you run some of the other hosts down, you insulted them. You called them names. Your ego is way out of control. I don't blame them for ignoring you.
If you want their support, you have to make amends.
Think about it.
p.s. Lose the dark shades on your website. They look stupid on Whoopee Goldberg and they look stupid on you.
Work on your image, attitude and manners and you might start getting the support you deserve.

Tonight I was listening to your show. You accused a caller of being paid to call in. Maybe you were right maybe not. I'm not in favor of Obama's health plan or much of anything he or the rest of this gov't has been doing to the country.

I did, however, take offense to what you said about France and Italy. Let's keep it to the facts about this country and not make snide remarks about people from other countries. First off, I've been there and they do have an influx of immigrants flooding their land from Africa, Pakistan and other poverty-stricken lands. Maybe not on the grand scale we have, but we do have a larger land mass to occupy.

I also do know of people who have gone to Italy and Poland for serious operations, such as quadruple bypasses, and have had excellent care, far beyond what we get in this country by highly competent doctors at a fraction of the price.

I also can obtain the same medicine, which costs me $500 a month here, across the border for $100. I drive, along with thousands of other Americans, across the border to get these drugs because I could not afford health insurance when I had my own corporation. Why should we pay 300% more for a drug when the rest of the world doesn't. Europeans laugh saying American pays for the rest of the world's drugs. Nice.

When you make remarks like "garlic breath and tomato stains on their white coats", you lose the argument just as much as the person who uses profanities. It only shows ignorance and does nothing to make a point on healthcare.

I've been horribly mistreated and misdiagnosed many times in the US both with and without health insurance. I've had relatives die from the incompetencies of our "illustrious" medical specialists.

Please don't fall into the category of a talk show host who talks just to hear his own voice. You have the mike, speak with intelligence, facts and don't downgrade another culture to raise a point or your own cause.

Oh, and the artificial heart was not invented in America. Neither was pasteurization, the Salk vaccine, etc. etc.

You can manipulate the American public by spewing misinformation very easily. We are a highly uneducated culture thanks to our school system. We're gullible and are too lazy to check the facts or read history.

Again, you have control of the mike, use it responsibly.

Yea doesn't it seem like the more educated someone is, the more they seem to be brainwashed, to accept, and agree with anything they have been taught. From cradle to college, with most all professors, having an anti-american, anti-capitalism, socialist answer to all this country's ills, at this point we need to take what's left of our country back. It use to be only land owners could vote, we can now see the result.

The reason why 300 plus border officers are being transfer from the Mexican border to the Candaian border is because, in 2010 the Winter Olympic's will be in Vancover Canada. I can imagine hundreds, even thousands of people will be attending the Olympic's from the U.S. not to mention hundreds of people from other countries who want to visit the United States while being in North America. Dear Michael, A million thanks for defending Jesus last night from the evil "works of art" we sadly hear of.
As you passionately spoke, I felt hot tears sliding down my face because of the overwhelming relief and consolation your defence of Jesus, Christianity and Judism brought to me.
Now, please do us the favor of explaining why Christians and Jews believe in the one True God of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob while Muslims only believe in the God of Abraham and Isaac. Apparently, ignoring Jacob makes a gigantic difference in civil, merciful behavior! Why?
P.S. Since you defended Jesus, He will defend you 100 times over. Thanks & Love

We have a tremendous amount of respect for you. We know our ordeal is minute compared to what you deal with every day. Please, for a moment, listen to a mother. We have a battle with a major university going on for our son's rights and NO ONE will listen. We cannot even find an attorney who will even talk to us to decide if he would be interested in taking the case. The university owns every lawyer we have contacted...they tell us they are on its payroll. The local media completely ignores us; the primary local reporter will not even ask a question on our behalf. The university has so much control over the area that we are at a total loss. People have no idea of the level of corruption and perversion which our university system is saturated with. And its all because of money. But I am asking you to please allow us to email you our story, just to get your advice. Please....I could find no other way to contact you.

For the Military Rolling Block collector, student, and historian, the final frontier has been reached, with practically no stone left unturned. A forty-six year odyssey that has culminated with a completely new menu of information consisting of hundreds of illustrations, the forgotten, lost letters of Samuel Norris, one of Remington’s chief agents and salesman, to include the Watson C. Squire papers at last provide “first person truths” of Remington Military Rolling Block sales in Europe, the Middle-East, and other geographical locations. Featured are many never before seen rifles and carbines, which include detailed illustrations of the elusive, multi-faceted, Greek Contract Rifle, the previously unseen rolling block rifles sold to Brazil, the Remington Cambodian carbine, and several more scarcities unseen to the collector fraternity. The author’s translation of scores of Spanish, Japanese, and other foreign documents never printed in English include the first ever published production numbers and years of Remington rolling block manufacture at China ’s Kiangnan Arsenal. At long last, collectors are given a complete backround of detailed accounts which include by country receipt listings, domestic production data, newly uncovered photographs, illustrations, and a whole host of facts, and anomalies regarding previously unknown military rolling block rifle production in Asia, and elsewhere.

Jam packed with completely new information on a subject frequently plagued by generations of hearsay, advertising hype, and sensational misinformation of the past.

The author’s lifelong association with the Military Rolling Block together with a history oriented publisher well versed in antique firearms, has for the first time, allowed unlimited space dedicated to the world’s longest lasting single-shot military rifle. The rolling block afficianado, to include those who cherish “all things Remington,” will find this the most complete work of its type yet published, with over 50 countries represented…$39.99… 8-1/2x11, hard cover, 240 pages, several hundreds of photos, and illustrations. I don’t recall hearing this on your, but unfortunately, I can’t listen every night. I know how much you enjoy seeing corrupt politicians getting caught this will make some fun reading.
Here in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the past 12 months the FBI has charged 25 people with various crimes from taking payoffs, bribes, stealing money, accepting free carpet in their home, a free custom made suit and plenty of other charges. Many have signed plea agreements with the FBI and have submitted their resignations.Pensions were denied, all benefits cut off. So far we have 3 judges, one county commissioner, an attorney, a few local businessmen, several school officials and other county officials who have been charged, only one has gone to jail so far.
The FBI is still nowhere near finished, it seems a day does not go by that someone is in the news being charged coming into or out of court. It looks like somebody turned on the lights and all the cockroaches and rats scatter. The depth and the level of corruption are amazing. With all the plea deals, expectations are for many to start rolling over and point fingers at others to try to save their asses.

I know there is a lot, so please don’t disregard this. Lower down are links to a few that will hook you to read more. Here’s a link to the local paper, this one has articles going back to the start:

Dr. Savage, you are the voice America needs! I know Chris Matthews got "shivers up his leg", listening to NOBAMA. The Savage Nation gets shivers every time you expose the truth to all of us.

WE don't want to JUST oppose Obama's Health Care on religious reasons. we DON'T want his Government Run Health Care PERIOD. If only a few or even a quarter of the people are exempted on religious reasons then there will be no health care out ther for the rest of the people except fron the Government..

I listened to your radio show for many years when I lived in the Bay area. Your analysis in the old O'Reilly interview is turning out to be absolutely true. In those days I believed Liberal policies would lead to their own destruction. I still believe this. The difference now is they are taking the country down with them.

Dr. Savage:

I live in extreme southwest Wyoming and can only hear you on KFAB Omaha or KOKC in Okla City. As you can imagine, some nights it's a little fuzzy. Please... anything closer to me?

By the way, didn't Warren Buffet $upport Obama? What's in it for him?
Just a socialist democrat? Or something more sinister? Why would someone who has profited so immensely from capitalism support someone/something so destructive of it? We know he owns the Washington Post, but I would like to avoid patronizing any of his other investments as well. Likewise with Geo. Soros -- how can we boycot these characters? It galls me that I may be unwittingly adding to their bottom line so they can support these tyrants. Let us know.

By the way, I plan to send you some light reading about animals in war theatres -- an old book I enjoyed as a child, Animal Reveille -- in response to your show a couple of weeks back.

Also -- looking for the article on 20 things the new health care bill will do. I am not as computer-savvy as some, and I find your website challenging. Keep up the good work. We appreciate you.

Kindest regards

I study the whole Bible with a group of people. They sometimes get into the idea that when bad happens, it is some sort of blessing. Several places in the Bible, when the Creator allowed people to be punished by other people, eventually the punishers were punished for being cruel. I remind my group that with some diligence, people can reduce the punishments, and sometimes even avoid them--as did Nineva in the time of Job. What happens IS allowed by the Creator; how bad it is is up to us.

obama people have no idea of the extent to which they have to be gulled in order to be led."
"The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of the nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies but would be ashamed to tell a big one."
"All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level, that even the most stupid of those towards whom it is directed will understand it. Therefore, the intellectual level of the propaganda must be lower the larger the number of people who are to be influenced by it."
"Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise."

Dr. Savage, I was trying to find a contact for you where I could send you an e-mail attachment. Since I could not, I will try this and hope you read it. funnystuff.com has had some very amusing and thought provoking videos criticizing the government and what is going on and knowing your sense of humor I thought you would like these if you haven't seen them. One of my favorites is "The Government Can," but there are also goo Obama spoofs and "High School Views About College" is good to explain why we have such a dumb generation now. If you watch these I know you will want to comment about them.

The fact that the US was so hostile to White Christian South Africa, yet is now engaged in two Middle Eastern wars for the convenience of the closely parallel phenomenon of Israel is really the definitive word on the state of ethnic politics in America.

long time listener and have all your books. You are right on the money with the way the people in power want to remove the church from this country. We saw it with Russia we saw it with Germany and look what happened to those two countries. If WE THE PEOPLE do notreally start to rise up we are finished in the near future. I tell my children all the time to pay attention to whats going on, this is your future. We need leaders like yourself to get us back to this countries culture and values. keep up the good work

Dr.Savage,I went to my sons school assembly where my son and a small group of students would recieve awards for student of the month and honor roll. But before I could see my son and the other achievers I had to sit while they read off 100 students names for hispanic achievment. When I looked to where the students had been sitting I noticed they called up most every hispanic student in the assembly.Tomarrow my son is expected to attend a school assembly in celebration of cinco de mayo. They attend school in a area that is hispanic majority.Whites get made fun of here for being white and gangs shoot each other once a week.We are a fairly small town and from my childhood to now it has been consumed with Mexican immigrants.Everything you say about immigration is true and then some.

Michael, I've been trying to get a message to you for a while now. I'm an old spirit. I have any answers you want about reincarnation. Your name used to be Uri and we were friends. You usually can't remember your previous lives without working on your meditations. Each time you come back here you need to learn new lessons from scrap. I'm not Sylvia Browne, I do have different gifts though. I hope you call. God Bless Us All.
