I met Mr.James Quello at an AM Radio Improvements meeting in 1990, enjoying his wit and humor, along with former Commissioner Wallace Johnson at the M Street McDonalds between sessions seeing and hearing first hand the bullying the Full Commission faced during those hyped-up AM Radio spins from broadcasters and the industry guns shooting for the now-dead issues to "improve" (and kill off) AM Broadcasting. The Commission has been forced by Congressional Lobby and in many ways our own "defacto" leadership in this industry (the NAB and their partners in the selling of Radio-TV equipment) to buy into ideas and technology not always in the best interests of the spectrum and the general public. The pressures placed on anyone in that office of the FCC must be a constant drain on integrity and "founding father principles". God Bless Jim Quello and ALL the engineers and legal staff who have remained faithful to the interests of our citizens as the bombs were dropped by the elite control players wielding the power to hold them hostage with lobbyists and false science claims and "research" at every turn in the journey. We have only a few remaining who attempt to hold the course in the face of banking and marketing interests in the Nation's Capitol. Jim Quello by today's standards is a giant among men and should be remembered for his open dialog and bold stance on just how "ignorant" as he declared on more than a few times how some of the FCC appointees were on broadcast issues.

Jim Quello always wanted to make it to his 100th birthday and already in his mind had the party planned! It would have been wonderful if he had five more years. But for all he did for radio and television and for his many friends we will spot him those five years and then some and take time today to celebrate his wonderful ninety five years of life. Everyone connected with our world can be proud of Jim Quello. Each time we decorate the Hastings family Christmas tree and hang the White House official ornament he sent each year, we will take a moment to remember our friend. He always took the time to think of others.

Jim Quello was a one-of-a-kind. Always colorful, engaging and street-smart, he had a host of friends and admirers throughout the communications industry, the FCC, and among elected officials from both major political parties. His voluminous articles, speeches and witticisms were legendary. And he retained his intellectual capacity and self-deprecating sense of humor to the very end.Without question, Jim Quello will be sorely missed.
