Former BMI exec headed for Universal

Music-SpeakerRichard Conlon was a key player in Broadcast Music Inc.’s push to monetize new digital media for its musician clients. He will now be making his expertise available for Universal Music Publishing Group.


Conlon’s title at BMI was Senior Vice President – Corporate Strategy, Communications & New Media.

Per agreement, his new title is Special Advisor on Performing Rights. He’ll report to Michael J. Sammis, UMPG EVP Operations and CFO, and David Kokakis, SVP/Head of Business & Legal Affairs and Business Development.

“It is, indeed, an interesting time in the evolution of the performing rights business and Richard’s expertise in developing systems and strategy will be extremely valuable towards maximizing the value of performing rights for UMPG and its songwriters,” said Sammis.

Conlon has engaged in negotiations with many of the biggest names in digital audio, including YouTube, Spotify, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, MP3.com, Apple’s iRadio and Pandora.
