With a radio career going back to the 1970s, Gary Elmore had been a fixture for the past 19 years as morning co-host on Clear Channel’s KWHN-AM Fort Smith, AR. The station reports that he died Monday.

Elmore, who was also the station’s Program Director, had suffered a heart attack three weeks ago.

According to the personal bio he wrote for the station website, Elmore was born in Ft. Smith and was a lifelong resident of Sebastian County. While he went to college with the intention of becoming a commercial artist, he was bitten by the radio bug and made it his career.

Elmore had posted a note on his station webpage thanking co-workers for celebrating his birthday on May 10th, saying that they were wonderful people and that he was honored to have them as friends. “Also this morning Del Williams stuck his head in the studio to wish me Happy Birthday…it was Del who hired me here at KWNH just over 19 years ago… Where have the years gone? I must think about that a while…so, Talk to you later, Gary.”

Friends and listeners are now posting their remembrances on that webpage.
