'Jay Leno' and 'Jimmy Fallon' rule Late-Night ratings week Sept. 6-10

NBC’s late-night lineup has delivered decisive ratings wins for the late-night week of September 6-10, with “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” winning over all cable and broadcast competition in adults 18-49 and total viewers.

Jay and Jimmy also delivered bigger audiences than the ABC and CBS competition in every key ratings category: adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, as well as total viewers.  Note that Thursday’s NBC telecasts were delayed by a high-rated primetime NFL overrun.  All Monday telecasts are excluded from these averages due to the Labor Day holiday.  And Friday’s “Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS was a rebroadcast.

Jay generated his biggest adult 18-49 audience (1.586 million) in 27 weeks, since the week of his return to “Tonight,” March 1-5.  In total viewers, it was Jay’s biggest audience (4.158 million) in 22 weeks, since April 5-9.  The delayed telecast on Thursday, Sept. 9 generated “Tonight’s” biggest overall audience for a single telecast (4.961 million) since March 4.

Jimmy Fallon delivered his biggest weeklong adult 18-49 audience (952,000) in more than seven months, since the week of January 18-22.  In total viewers, it was Jimmy’s biggest audience (1.923 million) in six months, since the week of March 1-5.

To date, Jay Leno has ranked #1 for 27 of 27 weeks versus “Late Show” in adult 18-49 rating and total viewers (including one tie in 18-49) since returning as host of “Tonight” on March 1 (excluding the week of Wimbledon delays).  Jimmy Fallon has ranked #1 or tied for #1 versus “Late Late Show” for 28 weeks in a row in 18-49 rating (excluding Wimbledon week).  In total viewers, Jimmy has won 10 weeks in a row.

In adults 18-49 for the week, Jay’s audience was 63 percent bigger than “Late Show’s” (1.586 million vs. 971,000), in total viewers, Jay won by 34 percent (4.158 million vs. 3.103 million) and in adults 18-34, his margin was 86 percent (666,000 vs. 359,000).  In adults 18-49, Jimmy Fallon’s audience was 80 percent bigger than “Late Late Show’s” (952,000 vs. 529,000), in total viewers, the “Late Night” advantage was 35 percent (1.923 million vs. 1.422 million) and in adults 18-34, Jimmy’s margin was 120 percent (425,000 vs. 193,000).

For the week at 1:35 a.m. ET, encore telecasts of “Last Call with Carson Daly” (0.5 rating in 18-49, 0.4 in 18-34) out-rated CBS’s originals of “Late Late Show” and ABC’s “Kimmel” first-runs in adults 18-49 and adults 18-34.

In adult 18-49 viewers, “Last Call” averaged 637,000 persons last week, its biggest 18-49 audience in more than seven months (since the week of January 18-22).  In total viewers, “Last Call” averaged 1.185 million persons for the week, its biggest overall audience in 15 months (since June 1-5, 2009).
