‘Jay Leno’ close-up; can ‘Leno’ take on ‘Letterman’ in the ratings

It is no secret that the ‘Leno Experiment’ did not work and Leno is heading back to his old time slot. The question now is will Leno be able to regain his competitive edge against ‘David Letterman’? Do you think ‘Leno’ can regain his late night magic?

Monday 01/11/10
From 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.6/4 in adults 18-49, a 1.8/4 in adults 25-54 and 4.8 million viewers overall.  The time-period competition included CBS’s “CSI: Miami” and the ABC’s “Castle.” 

“The Jay Leno Show” matched its highest Monday 18-49 rating in 13 weeks (since October 12) and is currently reporting its second-biggest total-viewer result for a Monday telecast over that same 13-week span, pending updates.

Comparisons with Jay Leno’s 2008-09 averages at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” are: in adults 18-49 (1.6 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (1.8 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (4.8 million vs. 5.1 million).  Comparisons with NBC’s Monday-through-Friday 10-11 p.m. ET non-sports averages over the 52 weeks prior to Jay’s debut are: in adults 18-49 (1.6 vs. 2.2), adults 25-54 (1.8 vs. 2.7) and total viewers (4.8 million vs. 6.9 million).

From 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.9/5 in adults 18-49; a 2.3/6 in adults 25-54 and 6.1 million viewers overall.  Last night’s time-period competition included CBS’s “The Good Wife” and ABC’s “The Forgotten.”

“The Jay Leno Show” was the hour’s #1 telecast on the major networks in men 18-34 and was #2 ahead of ABC’s “The Forgotten” in all other key ratings categories — adults and women 18-34; adults, men and women 18-49; adults, men and women 25-54; plus total viewers.  “Leno” out-delivered “Forgotten” by 46 percent in 18-49 (1.9 vs. 1.3) and 42 percent or 1.8 million persons in total viewers (6.2 million vs. 4.4 million).

Wednesday 01/13/10
From 10-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.6 rating, 4 share in adults 18-49; a 1.8/5 in adults 25-54 and 5.4 million viewers overall.  Last night’s time-period competition included CBS’s “CSI: NY” and ABC’s “Ugly Betty.”  In the time period, “Jay Leno” tied for #2 among the major networks in adult 18-49 (with “Ugly Betty”) and was #2 outright in all key adult-male categories.  It’s the second night in a row “Leno” has tied or topped a competing original drama on ABC in 18-49, after “Leno” out-rated ABC’s “The Forgotten” Tuesday night.

“The Jay Leno Show” scored its highest Wednesday 18-49 rating in four weeks and matched its highest Wednesday rating in 13 weeks (since October 14).  It’s also a four-week Wednesday high for “Leno” in total viewers.
