Stevens in for another tilt

What were you doing on 11/18/23? Don't remember? Neither, we believe, does Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was busy being born that day. That means he will turn 85 just a couple of weeks after Election Day, which he intends to celebrate by earning another six years in the Senate. He made his candidacy official last week. He has been chairman and is currently ranking member of the all-important Senate Commerce Committee, but has the challenge of running while under investigation for his dealings with alleged benefactors back in Alaska. He was first elected to the Senate in 1968.

RBR/TVBR observation: This Senate seat has been just about as safe as a seat can be. Stevens is an icon in his home state. But the charges, which included an FCC raid on his home outside Anchorage, put at least a modicum of doubt into his ability to return for another six years. But we wouldn't bet against it.
