House pushes Senate on federal shield

A bipartisan and ideologically diverse quarter of US Reps is urging Senate Majority and Minority leaders, Harry Reid (D-NV) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), respectively, to put the committee-approved Free Flow of Information Act on the floor for a vote. It has already passed the full House by an overwhelming 398-21 margin. The foursome includes John Conyers (D-MI), Mike Pence (R-IN), Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Roy Blount (R-MO). They want the bill on the desk of President Bush before Memorial Day.

RBR/TVBR observation: And Bush may well send it right back without a signature. The House margin, if it holds, is certainly veto-proof, but if the backing for an override erodes, the shield may have to wait another year. All three remaining major party presidential candidates have expressed their support for the measure.
