Michael CoppsFormer FCC Commissioner Michael Copps gained a measure of fame in communications circles when he used his position to wage a relentless campaign against media consolidation in general and the proposals of former Chairman Michael Powell in particular. He is now joining the board of communications industry watchdog organization Public Knowledge.

President and CEO Gigi B. Sohn made the announcement, saying, “We are honored and thrilled that such a prominent defender of the public interest as Commissioner Copps has become a member of our Board. We look forward to working closely with him and to learning from him.”
Copps also weighed in. He said, “I am honored and enthused to join the Public Knowledge Board.

PK has been an effective champion of the public interest across the whole wide gamut of telecommunications and media issues, and I have especially admired its work toward building a news and information infrastructure that informs citizens and deepens the civic dialogue upon which our self-government depends. Gigi Sohn and her excellent team do so much good work to advance the common good, and I look forward to lending a hand to their outstanding organization.”

At the same time, PK said that Wallman Consulting’s Kathleen Wallman was named Board chair, Supernova’s Kevin Werbach will be treasurer and Strategic Development’s Leah Belsky will be secretary.
