NAB holding town hall meeting with US radio on PRA issue

Unlike the closed door Radio Board meeting held 8/6/10 that produced the outlines of a possible Performance Rights Act deal with musicFirst/RIAA, attendees of the NAB’s town hall meeting on the same issue scheduled for Monday 8/23/10 will not require plane tickets – attendees will be able to access this confab on line.

The session will be held at 3PM eastern, and the purpose is to share with radio broadcasters updates on the talks between radio and recording interests that have been held at the behest of certain members of Congress.

In its invitation to the event, the organization said, “NAB Joint Board Chair Steve Newberry, Radio Board Chair Caroline Beasley, Immediate Past Radio Board Chair Charles Warfield, President and CEO Gordon H. Smith and Executive Vice President of Radio John David will participate in the discussion, during which you will have the opportunity to ask questions and offer your feedback directly to us.”

RBR-TVBR observation: Needless to say, interest in this issue has been at a fever pitch. We expect this to be one very-well-attended event.

Many in the industry have used RBR-TVBR’s comment function to weigh in on this issue, and although there has been some sentiment expressed to look for a deal that might finally bury this issue once and for all, it is very clear that the industry as a whole is not sold on accepting the deal as outlined.

The give and take at this session may well be the broadcast news highlight of the entire year.
