NBC touts gains for Whitney and Chelsea

Wednesday Results:
* At 8 p.m. ET, “Whitney” averaged a 1.6/5 in adults 18-49 and 4.3 million viewers overall.  Note that Thursday first-run telecasts of “Whitney” averaged a 34 percent increase to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issued “live plus seven day” results.


* Versus NBC’s average in the time period last season, “Whitney” is up 23 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 1.6 vs. a 1.3, “live plus same day” non-sports).  Versus NBC’s results in the half-hour on the same night last year, “Whitney” is up 14 percent in 18-49 (1.6 vs. 1.4). 

* At 8:30 ET, “Are You There, Chelsea?” (1.8/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) built on its 18-49 lead-in by 13 percent despite intense time-period competition from the season premiere of “American Idol.”  “Chelsea” was up 29 percent versus lead-in in adults 18-34 (1.8 vs. 1.4).

* Versus NBC’s average in the time period last season, “Are You There, Chelsea?” is up 29 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 1.8 vs. a 1.4).

* At 9 p.m. ET, “Harry’s Law” averaged a 1.1/3 in adults 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall.  Despite the arrival of competition this week from “American Idol,” “Harry’s” finished within a tenth of a rating point of its 1.2 rating for last week in 18-49.  In total viewers, the 12 original telecasts of “Harry Law” so far this fall have delivered NBC’s 12 biggest audiences in the time period on an in-season Wednesday since February 9, 2011.  Last night, “Harry’s Law” built on its total-viewer lead-in by 50 percent.  Note that “Harry’s Law” first-runs have been adding 42 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

* At 10 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” delivered a 1.8/5 in 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall.  “SVU” built on its lead-in by 64 percent in 18-49 rating.  From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew by 6 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.9 from a 1.8) and 5 percent in total viewers (6.6 million vs. 6.3 million), while competing dramas on ABC and CBS were declining in both categories.  Note that “Law & Order: SVU” originals have been adding 45 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

In Late-Night Metered Markets Wednesday night:
* In Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, household results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 2.9/7; CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” 2.7/7; and ABC’s combo of “Nightline,” 3.3/6; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 1.6/5. 

* In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 1.0/5; “Late Show,” 0.7/3; “Nightline,” 1.1/5; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 0.7/4.

* At 12:35 a.m., “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (1.6/6 in metered-market households) beat CBS’s “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.2/4).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, “Late Night” (0.6/4 in 18-49) topped “Late Late Show” (0.4/3).

* At 1:35 a.m., “Last Call with Carson Daly” averaged a 1.0/4 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.4/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.
