NBC’s cult following of ‘Chuck’ hangs in; ‘Heroes’- ‘Leno’ so-so

At 8 p.m. ET, “Chuck” averaged a 2.5 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers, matching its 18-49 rating of one week earlier and increasing by 4 percent week-to-week in total viewers.  In a time slot that included competition from Fox’s “House,” ABC’s “The Bachelor” and CBS’s encore comedies, “Chuck” ranked #2 among the major networks in all key adult-male demos.  Compared with NBC’s average in the time-period during the traditional 2008-09 season, last night’s “Chuck” is up 14 percent in 18-49 rating (2.5 vs. 2.2, live plus same day) and up 8 percent in total viewers (6.938 million vs. 6.409 million).


From its first half-hour to its second, “Chuck” increased its 18-49 rating by 13 percent (to a 2.6 from a 2.3), its adult 18-34 rating by 17 percent (2.1 vs. 1.8) and its men 18-34 rating by 29 percent (2.7 vs. 2.1).

From 9-10:01 p.m. ET, “Heroes” averaged a 1.9 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 4.3 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from ABC’s “The Bachelor,” Fox’s “24” and CBS’s comedy encores.  Week-to-week, “Heroes” is up 6 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.9 from a 1.8) and 8 percent in total viewers (4.3 million vs. 4.0 million)  “Heroes” is one of the most time-shifted shows on television, adding 29 percent to its 18-49 rating so far this season when going from these next-day “live plus same day” ratings to “live plus seven day” figures.  In total viewers, HEROES adds 1.2 million viewers to the previously reported “live plus same day” results when “live plus seven” ratings are released. 

From 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.2/3 in adults 18-49, a 1.5/4 in adults 25-54 and 4.3 million viewers overall.  The time-period competition included CBS’s “CSI: Miami” encore and the ABC’s “Castle.” 

Comparisons with Jay Leno’s 2008-09 averages at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” are: in adults 18-49 (1.2 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (4.3 million vs. 5.1 million).  Comparisons with NBC’s Monday-through-Friday 10-11 p.m. ET non-sports averages over the 52 weeks prior to Jay’s debut are: in adults 18-49 (1.2 vs. 2.2), adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 2.7) and total viewers (4.3 million vs. 6.9 million).

In Late-Night Local People Meters Monday night:
Conan O’Brien (1.0/4 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) out-delivered CBS’s LATE SHOW (0.8/4 with an encore telecast) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.

At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.6/4 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) topped CBS’s first-run LATE LATE SHOW (0.5/3). 

For the Week:
Paced by “The Office” and “The Biggest Loser,” NBC averaged a 1.7 rating, 4 share in 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers overall for the week of January 18-24.

NBC’s Tuesday telecast of “The Biggest Loser: Couples” ranked #9 among all primetime programs this week in the key demographic of adults 18-49, despite competing with the Tuesday edition of “American Idol,” which was the top-ranked entertainment program of the week. “The Office” ranked #12 among all programs this week in adults 18-49 and ranked #5 among all primetime programs this week in adults 18-34 (rankings exclude NFL post-game telecasts).

Primetime averages for the week of January 18-24 in adults 18-49 were Fox (8.8/23), CBS (2.4/6), ABC (2.1/6), NBC (1.7//4) and CW (0.8/2). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were Fox (24.4 million), CBS (9.6 million), ABC (6.3 million), NBC (5.3 million) and CW (1.9 million).
