Netflix affection for HBO goes unrequited

Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, recently floated the idea of bringing original HBO programming to its own subscribers by striking a deal with the Time Warner premium cable channel. In so many words, HBO said no way.

According to a Reuters report, Netflix would love to be able to put programming such as “The Sopranos” and other HBO series on its menu, and to that end the company has sought to downplay any hint of a rivalry between the two.

However, HBO is content to makes material available to its subscribers on its own website, HBO Go, which is available on desktop computers and mobile devices. HBO sees Netflix as a competitor.

Although Netflix cites deals it has with other content providers, HBO says there is no deal on the table, and there are not even any talks in progress to put a deal on the table.
