What’s being billed as the “first-ever streaming television service featuring live TV, DVR, and on-demand services, focused on entertainment, lifestyle and knowledge programming” has just been launched.

Discovery Communications and Viacom are among the partners participating in Philo.

The new service is priced at $16 per month, with a premium option including nine additional channels available for a $20 monthly fee.

Philo will carry content from A+E Networks, AMC Networks, Discovery, Scripps Networks, and Viacom, with channels and OTT-exclusive offerings including A&E, AMC, Animal Planet, AXS TV, BBC America, Cheddar, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, Food Network, GSN, HGTV, HISTORY, Investigation Discovery (ID), IFC, Lifetime, MTV, Nickelodeon, TLC, and Travel Channel announced.

The reality-and-hilarity “skinny bundle” allows subscribers to watch programs on up to three different devices at the same time; a seven-day free trial is being pitched to prospective users.

Philo is also luring cord-cutters and cord-nevers with unlimited 30-day DVR, “a deep on-demand library,” and MVPD capabilities including the pausing of any live channels and the ability to watch programs that have aired in the past three days.

Philo will also have a social platform designed to connect users with friends and family “to discover new content, effortlessly share your favorite shows, and watch shows together.”

Philo is led by CEO Andrew McCollum, an engineer and co-founder of Facebook.

He said, “Our goal at Philo is to build a television service that people love as much as they love their favorite shows. We started delivering streaming television at universities six years ago, and we’ve taken all of the unique insight we gained about this new generation of TV watchers in order to build a unique product and content package at an incredible value.”

Philo supports web browsers Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari; Roku devices; an iOS app; and Android via Chrome with an App coming soon.

The service takes its name from the individual credited with inventing the television — Philo T. Farnsworth.
