Prometheus objects to HD power surge

Low power FM proponent Prometheus Radio Project says that the FCC Media Board has made a “foolhardy” decision to allow a power increase in IBOC digital FM service, which it says could cause interference for existing stations.

In a newsletter to its members, PRP noted that lower-powered trials didn’t work all that well, so iBiquity Corporation asked for permission to add some juice.

PRP wrote, “A series of tests at higher power showed that this could cause quite a bit of interference to existing radio stations, but the FCC ruled to go ahead with allowing all IBOC stations using IBOC to quadruple their power anyway.” It says the FCC went ahead without making sure that existing LPFMs will not be harmed.

It will be pressing the FCC for reconsideration of the power increase.
