AMPTP states its case in full-page ads
WGA STRIKE CENTRAL DAY 10
As the WGA strike goes on into day 10, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) placed full-page ads, "Setting the Record Straight," in entertainment trade pubs to state their case. The ads stress writers already get paid when TV shows and films are downloaded from online stores like iTunes, and that that writers get a residual fee when episodes or films are rented online. AMPTP said payments from digital rentals and downloads were part of the more than 260 million in "record-breaking residuals" paid to WGA West members last year.
However, WGA still contends writers don't get paid when TV shows are streamed for free on ad-supported network sites such as ABC.com or Hulu.com.
The AMPTP ads said a proposal to pay writers for that streaming was on the table when talks broke off 11/4.
