Alaskan TV pioneer dies

KTVA-TV (Ch. 11, CBS) Anchorage reports the death of the man who put the station on the air in 1953 as the first TV station in Alaska. Augie Hiebert was 90. After helping to launch a couple of radio stations in the '40s, Hiebert founded Northern Television Inc., which built both KTVA and its Fairbanks sister, KTVF (Ch. 11), originally also a CBS affiliate, but now NBC. In 2005, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northwest Chapter, honored Hiebert as the first inductee into its Gold Circle.
