Martha heading to jail
Martha Stewart announced that she has decided to go to prison as soon as possible because "I want to put this nightmare behind me and get on with my life as soon as possible." Although Stewart has asked a federal judge to let her begin serving her five-month jail sentence, her lawyers will continue to appeal her conviction. She also faces five months of house arrest after serving the prison time. Stewart resigned as CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia when she was indicted on charges of lying to investigators about insider trading related to a bio-tech company.
Congressman wants probe of CBS
Amid widespread reports by other news outlets that disparaging documents used in a "60 Minutes" piece by Dan Rather about President George W. Bush's service in the Air National Guard appear to be forgeries (9/14/04 TVBR Daily Epaper #179), at least one Member of Congress is calling for a government probe of CBS News. In a letter to Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), Chairman of the House Telecommunications Subcommittee, which oversees the FCC, Rep. Christopher Cox (R-CA) called for the subcommittee to investigate "the continued use by CBS News of apparently forged documents concerning the service record of President George W. Bush intended to unfairly damage his reputation and influence the outcome of the 2004 presidential election."
