For its new SVP/Corporate Research, Univision Communications looked to a former PBS executive for its top candidate for the job.

Steve McGowan is already settled in to his new role, and will now be based in New York, where he reports to EVP/Corporate Research Jed Meyer.

McGowan has served as a media research consultant for Washington, D.C.-based Monocacy Media Partners since 2012. From August 2014 through July 2016, he served as VP/Research for the Public Broadcasting Service.

McGowan’s prior experience includes two stints as SVP/Research at Discovery Communications, and as SVP/Insights & Client Research Initiatives at The Nielsen Company.

He began his career as a NAB research associate in August 1983.

In his new role, McGowan will help oversee Univision’s research efforts, providing leadership, strategic analysis and support for network management, programming and ad sales. To this end, he will work closely with industry groups including the Media Rating Council and partners such as Nielsen and comScore “to ensure that methodologies are sound and Univision audiences are adequately represented,” the company says.

Additionally, McGowan will support thought leadership efforts and partner with Univision stakeholders “to execute initiatives and identify custom research opportunities,” Univision notes.

Meyer commented, “Steve has over 20 years of robust industry experience in syndicated research, ad hoc analysis and strategic consulting, including project-level planning on new technologies at several media companies. His expertise will be crucial for UCI as we continue to expand our research initiatives and work to ensure that today’s methodologies are representative of the country’s changing demographics and inclusive of the U.S.-Hispanic communities we serve.”

At PBS, McGowan directed all of the syndicated and custom research efforts for the entity’s headquarters operations, collaborating with more than 300 local affiliates nationwide.
