WABC-TV most watched in NYC; ‘Eyewitness News’ dominates

WABC-TV continues to be New York’s most watched broadcast television station in Households and key Adults 25-54 in Nielsen’s May 2010 sweep. With a 3.3 rating/9 share in DMA Households, Monday-Sunday Sign-On to Sign-Off, WABC-TV continues its dominant run in the nation’s largest television market. With each rating point representing 74,935 Tri-State area TV households, ABC 7 attracts a larger audience than any other television station in the country. 


WABC-TV also continues to be New York’s news leader.  The station’s legacy “Eyewitness News” franchise continues to lead the market in Households and key Adults 25-54.

WABC-TV’s ongoing success begins with the early morning news race. At 5am, “Eyewitness News This Morning” with Lori Stokes, Ken Rosato and Bill Evans boasts a DMA Household rating that is at least 50% higher than any competitor. At 6am, WABC-TV tops its closest competitor by 16% in DMA Households. In key Adults 25-54, WABC-TV is at least double any competitor at 5am, and maintains a 31% edge over its closest local news competitor at 6am.

 “Eyewitness News at Noon” with Lori Stokes, Ken Rosato and Bill Evans holds a 43% lead over its closest competition in DMA Households.  It also has a 38% advantage among Women 25-54 viewers.

WABC-TV’s “Eyewitness News at 5” with Diana Williams, Sade Baderinwa and Lee Goldberg tops its nearest competitor by 33% in DMA Households and is more than its two competitors combined among Adults 25-54.  This sweep marks the 71st consecutive survey period that WABC-TV has finished an outright #1 in DMA Households among local M-F 5pm newscasts.

The weekday edition of “Eyewitness News at 6” with Bill Ritter, Liz Cho, Lee Goldberg and Scott Clark maintains a 53% advantage in DMA Households over its nearest competitor, and also wins among Adults 25-54.  This sweep marks the 76th consecutive survey period that WABC-TV has finished an outright #1 in DMA Households among local M-F 6pm newscasts.

The Mon-Fri edition of “Eyewitness News at 11” featuring Bill Ritter, Liz Cho, Lee Goldberg and Scott Clark completes the total weekday victory for “Eyewitness News.”  WABC-TV wins the late news race with a 23% advantage in DMA Households. WABC-TV is also number one among Adults 25-54.             
“Eyewitness News” is equally strong on Saturdays and Sundays.   “Eyewitness News This Morning” with Michelle Charlesworth, Phil Lipof, and Jeff Smith, collectively delivers the key Adult 25-54 demographic better than any of its competitors. On weekend nights, “Eyewitness News at 11,” featuring Joe Torres, Sandra Bookman, Heidi Jones and Rob Powers, is #1 in both DMA Households and Adults 25-54.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Channel 7 ranks #1 in the key area of Women 25-54.  In the evening, ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” holds a commanding lead in both Households and Adults 25-54. This longtime ABC news mainstay’s DMA Household rating is 68% higher than its closest competitor, and it holds an 88% edge in Adults 25-54.

During the day, more people in the tri-state area keep their TVs tuned to ABC7. “Live with Regis and Kelly” continues its two-decade-plus stretch of dominance at 9am, where it delivers a Household rating 75% higher than that of its closest competitor. 

ABC’s “The View” easily wins its time period in Households and key Women 25-54. From 1-4p, ABC’s soaps “All My Children”, “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital” lead the market in Households and Women 25-54.

WABC-TV’s syndicated programs “Rachael Ray,” “Millionaire,” “Oprah,” “Jeopardy,” and “Wheel of Fortune” continue to win or be highly competitive in their respective time periods in Households and most key demographics, including Adults and Women 25-54.

In Primetime, WABC-TV’s strong slate boasts 6 of the top 10 regularly scheduled programs among Women 25-54, 4 of the top 10 among Adults 18-49, and 4 of the top 10 among Adults 25-54.

ABC’s “Nightline” continues its long run of success by ranking #1 among all Late Night programs in Household rating and Adults 25-54.  In Late Night, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” continues to generate buzz and performs well among all late night network entertainment programs.

WABC-TV’s new iPhone app generated 1.1 million page views, according to the most recent data. 7online.com also generated 4.5 million page views in the month while 7togo.com generated approximately 2.8 million.
