Week 21: Strong week for Fox

FOX gave a very strong performance last week despite significant competition, ranking #2 among Adults 18-49 behind a Grammys-boosted CBS. In fact, with regularly-scheduled programming, FOX won the week in the core adult demographic (2.7 vs. 2.6 for CBS). 


Overall, FOX delivered 5 of the Top 20 programs among Adults 18-49, 8 of the Top 20 programs among Adults 18-34 and 9 of the Top 20 programs on television among Teens, excluding sports. Season to date, FOX is averaging a 3.3/9 in the core adult demographic and remains firmly in first place this midseason.

Key highlights for the week:

* AMERICAN IDOL outperformed its biggest unscripted competitor for the week (The Voice) in the comparable 8-9pm hour by +5% among Adults 18-49 (6.1 vs. 5.8) and by +18% in Total Viewers (19.3 vs. 16.3 Mil.) 
o In addition, AMERICAN IDOL-Wed. beat the entire 8-10pm average of Monday’s The Voice by +8% in Total Viewers (19.3 vs. 17.8 Mil.) last week.

* AMERICAN IDOL also posted gains on both nights last week and drove nightly wins for FOX on Wednesday and Thursday last week
o The first Hollywood Week episode kicked off on Wednesday with 6.1/17 among Adults 18-49, up +2% versus the previous Wednesday rating.  In Total Viewers, AMERICAN IDOL-Wednesday was up +4% versus the previous week.
o Thursday’s night two of Hollywood Week posted a 5.8/16, up +5% among Adults 18-49 and up +4% in Total Viewers versus the previous Thursday

* FOX’s Tuesday night comedy block held steady thanks to strong deliveries by GLEE, NEW GIRL and RAISING HOPE and won the night among young adults, Teens and Women 18-49.
o NEW GIRL and GLEE were the top two programs of the night among Adults 18-34
o GLEE (3.3/9) dipped a bit in the adult demographic but was the highest-rated program of the night among its core Teens audience
o NEW GIRL was steady week-over-week with a 3.5/9 and won its 9pm time period among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens.
o RAISING HOPE closed the night with a 2.1/5, up +5% from its performance the previous week.

* MOBBED once again grew week over week following its AMERICAN IDOL lead-in. The show posted a 3.0/8, up +7% from the previous week among Adults 18-49 and drew 8.5 million Total Viewers – up +8% from the previous week (vs. 7.9 Mil.).

Airing against increased competition on Monday, HOUSE delivered a 2.5/6 among Adults 18-49, followed by ALCATRAZ which posted a 2.3/5.  FOX ranked third for the night among Adults 18-49 (tie) and Adults 18-34.

On Tuesday, FOX ranked a very close second for the night in the core adult demographic, just one-tenth behind CBS (3.1 vs. 3.2).  FOX’s comedies won the night among Adults 18-34, Teens and Women 18-49.  In fact, FOX outperformed its nearest competitor on Tuesday among Adults 18-34 by +100% (3.2 vs. 1.6 for both ABC and CBS).

NEW GIRL and GLEE were the top two programs of the night among Adults 18-34.
At 8pm, GLEE drew a 3.3/9 among Adults 18-49 and was the second-highest rated program of the night in Adults 18-34, behind only NEW GIRL. In addition, it was the highest rated program of the night among Teens.  In the 8pm hour, GLEE ranked #2 in Adults 18-49 and won the hour in Adults 18-34 and Teens.

At 9pm NEW GIRL held steady with a 3.5/9, the same as the previous week (1/31/12, 3.5/9).  NEW GIRL was the highest rated program of the night among Adults 18-34 and the second-highest rated program of the night in Adults 18-49. In addition, NEW GIRL won the 9pm half hour among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens.

RAISING HOPE closed the night with a 2.1/5, up +5% from its performance the previous week (1/31/12, 2.0/5).  RAISING HOPE won its 9:30pm half hour among young adults.

WEDNESDAY

FOX won another Wednesday night among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Adults 25-54 and Teens and beat the next highest rated competitor for the night by +48% in Adults 18-49 (4.6 vs. 3.1 for ABC) and +40% in Total Viewers (14.0 vs. 10.0 for CBS).
                                                                                                           
At 8pm, the first Hollywood Week episode of AMERICAN IDOL delivered a 6.1/17, up +2% versus the previous week (2/1/12, 6.0/17).  In Total Viewers, AMERICAN IDOL was up +4% versus the previous week (19.3 vs. 18.5 Mil).  Compared to its most recent telecast, AMERICAN IDOL was up +11% in both Adults 18-49 (6.1 vs. 5.5) and Total Viewers (19.3 vs. 17.4 Mil.).

AMERICAN IDOL beat the 8-9p hour of The Voice on Monday by +5% among Adults 18-49 (6.1 vs. 5.8) and by +18% in Total Viewers (19.3 vs. 16.3 Mil.)  IDOL also outperformed the entire 8-10p average of The Voice on Monday in Total Viewers by +8% (19.3 vs. 17.8 Mil.)

AMERICAN IDOL was the highest rated program of the night in Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers.

In addition, AMERICAN IDOL outperformed the combined four-network competition in the 8pm hour by +5% among Adults 18-49 (6.1 vs. 5.8) and beat the combined three-net competition by +20% among Adults 18-49 (6.1 vs. 5.1 for ABC/CBS/NBC) and +10% in Total Viewers (19.3 vs. 17.6 Mil for ABC/CBS/NBC).

At 9pm, MOBBED posted a 3.0/8, up +7% from the previous week (2/1/12, 2.8/7).  In Total Viewers MOBBED was up +8% from the previous week (8.5 vs. 7.9 Mil.) and ranked #1 in its hour among Teens.

THURSDAY

FOX once again won Thursday night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Adults 25-54 and Teens and outperformed its nearest competitor for the night by +11% in Adults 18-49 (4.0 vs. 3.6 for CBS).
                                                           
With the second night of Hollywood Week, AMERICAN IDOL posted a 5.8/16, up +5% among Adults 18-49 (2/2/12, 5.5/16) and up +4% in Total Viewers (18.1 vs. 17.4 Mil.) versus the previous Thursday

AMERICAN IDOL delivered the show’s highest-rated Thursday telecast so far this season in both Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers. In addition, it was the highest rated program of the night among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers and Teens and beat the #2 program of the night (Big Bang Theory) by +4% in Adults 18-49 and +12% in Total Viewers.

In Total Viewers, AMERICAN IDOL grew over its prior Thursday’s performance for the second week in a row (17.1 > 17.4 > 18.1 Mil.)

At 9pm an original episode of THE FINDER delivered a 2.2/6 and ranked #1 in its hour among Teens.
