Newport Television’s WHAM-TV Rochester, NY is adding a 10 pm daily newscast to its CW digital multicast channel. The station’s main channel is the market’s ABC affiliate.

Effective Saturday, New Year’s Day, 13WHAM News will begin broadcasting a half-hour of local news, weather and sports at 10 pm on “Rochester’s CW.” It will air seven days per week and be broadcast in HD. 13WHAM News on the ABC station has been in HD since September.

WHAM’s ABC programming airs on channel 13.1 and CW on 13.2. Rochester’s CW is also carried locally on Time Warner Cable channel 16 and in HD on Time Warner Cable channel 1016.

“We have a commitment to this community to be the leaders in local news and weather,” said Chuck Samuels, Vice President and General Manager of 13WHAM-TV.  “We are extremely excited to expand our news product, and give the people of Rochester a convenient alternative to the late news.”

RBR-TVBR observation: Here is another example to show the naysayers in Washington that duopolies actually produce more news programming. Rochester viewers will now have two choices for local news at 10:00 pm. The new one from Newport’s ABC/CW duop joins the existing 10 pm newscast on Sinclair’s WUHF-TV (Fox), produced via a virtual duopoly operated by Nexstar’s WROC-TV (CBS).
