Why Set-Top Box Issue is Critical

FCCLobbying has become intense as the FCC gets closer to voting on the chairman’s set-top box changes.


Chairman Tom Wheeler’s proposal to “unlock the box” is proving controversial, as programmers, consumer groups and various industry associations want to bend his and other commissioner’s ears before the planned vote this week.

The concept is to allow more manufacturers and software developers access to set-top box manufacturing which would, arguably, reduce the cost and open the door to companies like Apple of Google and give consumers more choice about the devices and apps they use to watch pay-television.
