Brooks, at 86, never retired from the station. He’d been behind the mic for 50 years at the heritage all-newser. He was the station’s first news director when it flipped from Rock & Roll to all-news in 1965.
Said Ben Mevorach, Director of News & Programming, 1010 WINS Radio: “Like every challenge he has ever faced, Stan met this final one with the same class, dignity and humility that defined every day of his almost 87 years on this earth. There will never be another one like him.”
Added Scott Herman, EVP/Operations, CBS Radio, who was WINS VP/GM from 1994-2003: “Not only was Stan Brooks a walking encyclopedia on NYC politics he was one of the finest, decent and most dignified men who ever lived. We were lucky to have him on 1010 WINS for the past 51 years and we will never ever forget him.”
Brooks died from cancer.

RBR-TVBR observation: Want to live longer? Keep working as long as you can, they say—if you love what you’re doing. Brooks epitomized that and lived a long, healthy, full life, one that many New Yorkers will never forget. He chronicled the good and bad of NYC for five decades—a legacy that’s pretty much unmatched. Kudos to CBS Radio for realizing that true talent is ageless.
I had the good fortune of working with Stan in the 80’s and he was a true gentleman and consummate professional. I was saddened to learn of his passing but will have fond memories of him and his legacy.
I met Stan Brooks when I joined the sales team at WINS early in my radio career. Stan was a consummate professional with a sense of humor. He was always willing to engage in conversation if you showed an interest in a topic . The industry has lost a legendary talent with the passing of Stan Brooks. May he RIP.
