Tribune’s Lazarus Effect: A Shift For Its Top Lawyer

A company that considers itself “the inventor of multi-room wireless home audio” has just snagged the General Counsel and Chief Strategy Officer for the company that Nexstar Media Group wishes to acquire.

It’s a man many in the Nation’s Capital know very well: From June 2009 to February 2012 he served as Chief of Staff to then-FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

Starting Jan. 2, 2019, Eddie Lazarus will join the Sonos team as its new Chief Legal Officer.

Lazarus will be responsible for all legal, corporate governance, SEC reporting, government affairs, regulatory and compliance activities across Sonos’ global operations.

He also gets an arguably nicer office setting, as Lazarus will report directly Sonos CEO Patrick Spence and will be based at the company’s Santa Barbara, Calif., headquarters.

The shift for Lazarus comes as Tribune Media, where he has been EVP/General Counsel since January 2013, is poised to become merged with the Perry Sook-led Nexstar.

“As we continue to grow as a public company, Eddie adds an important strategic voice to our leadership team at Sonos,” said Spence. “His broad experience in legal and government affairs combined with deep expertise in business strategy will be essential as we continue to expand into new markets and categories, and reach more listeners throughout the world.”

At the FCC, Lazarus oversaw policy development and implementation, strategic planning, communications, legislative and intergovernmental affairs, and agency management.

Before that, Lazarus was known across D.C. as a partner and member of the Management Committee at esteemed law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, where he chaired the firm’s national litigation steering committee.

Prior to entering private practice, Lazarus served as federal prosecutor in Los Angeles. Thus, it is a return to California for Lazarus.

“Over the years, Sonos has built an impressive culture of innovation that is positioned for great success over the long-term,” Lazarus said. “I’m excited to join the Sonos team as it continues to invent terrific products and build a business that inspires the world to listen better.”

In addition to his career as an attorney, Lazarus is the author of two highly acclaimed books: “Black Hills/White Justice: The Sioux Nation Versus the United States, 1775 to the Present” and “Closed Chambers: The Rise, Fall, and Future of the Modern Supreme Court.” His writing has also appeared in publications such as The Atlantic Monthly, U.S. News & World Report, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune.
