A sportscaster to look up to

7-foot-1 center Shaquille O’Neal of the NBA Phoenix Suns has been at Syracuse University the past few days preparing for the future. That’s a radio show and a TV show.

“Shaq” has been attending Sportscaster U., the program put together by Syracuse University play-by-play sportscaster Matt Park and ESPN announcer Dave Ryan, also a Syracuse alumnus. Sportscaster U. is a condensed course in broadcasting for athletes wanting to make the transition to media as their playing days come to an end.

“After basketball, I want to have my own radio show, my own TV show,” Shaq told Mike Waters of the Syracuse Post-Standard. Waters noted that the NBA star could easily snag a major TV sports gig based just on his basketball fame. Shaq agreed, but said he was taking the course because he wanted to do it right. “I don’t like to be given anything. I like to earn,” he said.
