ABC’s ‘20/20’ beats NBC’s ‘Dateline’ hits #1 Friday

ABC took first place on Friday night, 12/18/09, in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 – tie), Women 18-49 (1.9/6 – tie), Adults 18-34 (1.1/4), Women 18-34 (1.5/5) and Women 25-54 (2.3/6 – tie). 


Building on its lead-in, a special 9 o’clock telecast of ABC’s 20/20 earned first place in the hour, beating NBC’s time-slot-regular Dateline in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 vs. 1.3/4).   20/20 also ranked #1 with Adults 25-54 (1.8/5), Women 18-49 (1.9/6) and Women 25-54 (2.3/6).

The ABC news show featured Jim Avila’s reporting on a rising star in the fashion world’s fall from grace after models accused him of being a sexual predator.

The ABC newsmagazine generated ABC’s second-biggest audience in the time period this season in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind only 11/20/09.

Building on its lead-in among viewers and young adults, ABC News’ 20/20 won Friday’s 10 o’clock hour in Total Viewers (6.7 million) and across all adult demos: Adults 18-49 (1.7/5), Women 18-49 (2.3/7), Adults 18-34 (1.2/5), Women 18-34 (1.6/6), Adults 25-54 (2.1/6) and Women 25-54 (2.9/8). 

The program featured Chris Cuomo’s reporting on the desperate attempt by two American men to find their young sons, as both are tangled in international custody disputes.  It was the ABC newsmagazine’s 8th week in a row to rank #1 on Friday at 10pm with Adults 18-49. 

20/20 qualified as Friday’s #1 regularly scheduled TV show in Total Viewers, Adults 18-49, Women 18-49, Adults 25-54 and Women 25-54.
