On January 31, 1997, the broadcast television company still known as Gannett selected a corporate-level VP and news executive to serve as President/GM of its ABC affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Twenty-two years later, she’s stepping down from the role at WZZM-13, and will be retiring after 44 years in the TV industry.

Janet Mason formally made the announcement on Wednesday, and will exit the TEGNA station at the end of this summer.

Mason’s journey includes an eight-year run, starting in 1988, as VP/News for KARE-11 in Minneapolis. Before that, she was a general assignment reporter and an assistant news director.

Before joining KARE, she worked for television stations in Wausau, Wisc.; and in Des Moines/Ames and Mason City, Iowa.
