‘American Idol’ 90-minuted premiere blows everyone away


Last night’s 90-minute Wednesday premiere of AMERICAN IDOL posted a 10.1 among Adults 18-49.  The combined AMERICAN IDOL Tue/Wed average this week retained 94% of last year’s week one performance (11.1 vs. 11.8) even as last night’s IDOL did not have last year’s advantage of being a two-hour telecast.

AMERICAN IDOL from 8-9:30P outperformed the combined 4-net competition in the time period by a substantial +53% among Adults 18-49 (10.1 vs. 6.6 for ABC/CBS/NBC/CW), +84% among Adults 18-34 (9.0 vs. 4.9), +181%, Teens (7.6 vs. 2.7) and +22% in Total Viewers (26.4 vs. 21.6 Mil.)

Last night’s AMERICAN IDOL was the second highest rated entertainment telecast of the season among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34 and Teens (behind Tuesday’s AMERICAN IDOL.)

FOX posted the second highest rated night with entertainment programming on any network so far this season among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Total Viewers (behind Tuesday’s AMERICAN IDOL.)

At 9:30p, FOX aired a special encore telecast of THE SIMPSONS that posted a 3.6/9 among Adults 18-49.  THE SIMPSONS ranked No. 2 in its half hour among Adults 18-49 and No. 1 among Adults 18-34, Teens and key demos. 

FOX won the night among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Adults 25-54, Teens and all key demos.

FOX dominated the next highest rated network for the night and displayed gains of +174% among Adults 18-49 (8.5 vs. 3.1 for CBS), +280% among Adults 18-34 (7.6 vs. 2.0 for CBS), +622% among Teens (6.5 vs. 0.9 for CBS) and +91% in Total Viewers (21.8 vs. 11.4 for CBS).

On ABC, a repeat Modern Family (1.7/5) was followed by originals of The Middle (2.1/6), Modern Family (3.2/8), Cougar Town (3.1/8) and Ugly Betty (1.6/5).

CBS aired The New Adventures Of Old Christine (1.9/5), Gary Unmarried (1.9/5), Criminal Minds (3.9/10) and CSI: NY (3.6/10).
NBC aired original episodes of Mercy (1.5/4), Law & Order: SVU (2.0/5) and The Jay Leno Show (1.6/4).
