For 11 years, David Abel served as a sales manager overseeing AEs and all advertiser needs for Cox Media Group‘s radio stations in Birmingham, Orlando, and Greenville-Spartanburg.
He would move on to other radio broadcasting companies, and since November 2015 has been based in Tulsa.
Now, with the recent sale of the stations in this Oklahoma metropolis, Abel is returning to Cox Media — just in time for a possible ownership investment from Apollo Group.
Abel has been appointed VP/Market Manager of Cox’s radio stations in San Antonio: Active Rocker KISS-FM 99.5, Oldies/Classic Hits combo KONO-AM 860 and FM 101.1, Classic Rock KTKX-FM 106.7 “The Eagle”, “Country Legends” KKYX-FM 104.9, mainstream Country KCYY-FM 100.3 and AC KSMG 105.3.
He takes the role after serving as VP/GM of a group of Tulsa stations sold by The E.W. Scripps Co. to Griffin Communications in July 2018.
Before joining those stations in November 2015, Abel was COO of New Point Digital, based in Charleston, S.C.
However, for many years before that, Abel was a radio sales pro, and served as VP/GM for a group of stations in Charleston and Hilton Head, S.C., under Apex Broadcasting, from April 2011-November 2015.
He began his career with Guaranty Broadcasting in New Orleans, in 1999, and joined Cox for his first go-around in 2001.
Abel is a recognized industry leader and was honored in 2015 by Radio Ink magazine as one of the “Best Managers in Radio.”
Now, he reports to CMG RVP Rob Rabin, who says Abel returns to the company “with a wealth of experience and leadership qualities that make him the ideal fit for this role. I look forward to the positive impact he will have on our incredible CMG/San Antonio team.”
Abel added, “The team consists of extremely talented professionals who I am honored to work with and lead as we continue delivering the best in class local content that serves our audiences, our advertisers, and the San Antonio community.”
