Bert Bank dead at 94

Alabama broadcasting pioneer Bert Bank, who started WTBC-AM & WUOA-FM Tuscaloosa and the Unive4rsity of Alabama Football Network, has died at age 94.


Bank was also a war hero. Captured by the Japanese in World War II, he was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. Bank, who wrote about his experiences in “Back From the Living Dead,” was a Major when he left the Air Force in 1947.

Returning to his home state of Alabama, Bank started WTBC and later WUOA. He sold the stations in 1985.

Bank also served two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives and one in the State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor.
