Big market ratings results

“Know the score!” was a positioning slogan I gave the original Sports 590 WEEI-AM, Boston, when it was 5kw and owned by The Boston Celtics, in the early ‘90s. Financials, score and standings are essential information. Continuing with a closer look and adjusted format for the latest radio ratings results, consider the broader picture if we saw a basic 6+ or 12+ total persons number for every licensed broadcast radio station in each of the 284 Nielsen rated markets. During the Arbitron book reign, anyone could see a copy of all the numbers and selling unsubscribed info was strictly prohibited. And, even back when, nobody sold on a broad number. While paying customers do get extensive data to mine, a partial score from one team doesn’t tell the story, i.e. one big group’s 5 station cluster in a 32 station Top 75 quarterly market, lacks basic “apples to apples” comparison. Let’s not make it unnecessarily tough to promote radio’s strengths without everyone’s headline data. Seeing a simple score for all stations spotlights the multiple services, markets, attracts advertisers and stimulates more business for all. Nielsen, too.

With a format adjustment in presentation (always good to start the New Year) let’s check more Top 25 major PPM radio markets with what we have for 6+ October/November/December shares and total cume numbers published for November 10 – December 3.
