BMI has a new way to value the most-played songs on digital services.
Beginning now, BMI songwriters and music publishers of the top 20% of the most-played songs on Spotify and Rhapsody will receive a bonus.
The company says it has distributed a similar bonus for the most-played songs on broadcast radio “for decades,” and as the use of its music grows on digital platforms, the new bonus gives BMI an opportunity to “reflect the increasing value of our affiliates’ music in the digital marketplace.”
The change also folds in a deeper pool of songwriters and publishers who might not also receive radio bonuses.
BMI says it plans to add other streaming services into the calculations of the new bonus this year.
