Broadband is unsurprising topic of FCC meeting

The due date for the FCC’s National Broadband Plan is 3/17/10, a date that is exactly one month later than the original due date. There is a monthly Open Meeting scheduled for 3/16/10. Any guesses as to what the topic is going to be?

If you guessed “A National Broadband Plan for Our Future,” as Don Rickles might say, you win a cookie!

Broadband was known to be the pet project of new FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, and was also known to be a focus of the incoming Obama administration. It has been the dominant topic of conversation at the FCC ever since the DTV transition was executed in mid-June 2009.

RBR-TVBR observation: There are several issues of great importance to broadcasters floating around the FCC right now. There are ongoing proceedings on localism and diversity and there is the 800-pound gorilla barging around the halls – the quadrennial review, which will examine localism and diversity and a host of other issues. Will broadcasting move up the attention ladder as of 3/18/10? Stay tuned.
