Cable systems in Georgia, Alabama become Charter members

The nation’s fourth largest cable operator, Charter Communications Inc., is about to get a little bit larger – 17K subscribers larger, more of less – when it closes on the acquisition of three southern cable systems.
The seller is Windjammer Communications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition is designed to strengthen the buyer in areas where it already has a presence. All three of the cable systems are in areas already served by Charter systems.

Charter President, Operations Steven Apodaca stated, “These properties have a strong geographic link with the communities Charter has served in Alabama and Georgia for many years, and this transaction is very much aligned with our strategy of enhancing core system clusters.”

The systems being bought include:

* Fort Benning, GA near Charter communities surrounding Columbus GA

* Fort Payne AL near Charter communities surrounding Albertville AL

* Cullman AL near Charter’s operations in Decatur and Birmingham AL.

The systems already offer things like digital video, high-speed Internet and phone services, and Charter plans to introduce further improvements mirroring the services it offers in the region.
