CBS to challenge CC Radio in the top two markets

CBS is attempting to shake up formats in NYC and LA—according to two reliable sources. CBS Radio this week will flip one FM in NYC and one FM in LA to CHR. This will put them in direct competition with CC Radio’s successful KIIS-FM LA and WHTZ-FM NYC.

PPM is obviously in love with CHR and CBS Radio wants a piece of that pie in NYC and LA. CC Radio’s Z-100 has fluctuated from an impressive 5.7 to 6.0 from August through December of last year. In LA, KIIS-FM has gone from a 5.9 in August to a 6.2 during the holidays. These are huge numbers that add up to big ad dollars. CBS Radio Dan Mason has also stated he is 100% behind PPM—you can understand why.

The possibles as we see them for the flip in LA: KCBS-FM (Jack) 93.1—PPM ratings have dropped from 3.9 in Aug. ’08 to 2.9 in Dec. ’08, or KLSX-FM 97.1 (Talk), which has not gone above a 1.5 in months.

For NYC we think it could be WWFS-FM (Soft AC) 102.7—PPM ratings have dropped from 3.5 in August ’08 to a 2.7 over the Holidays, or WXRK-FM (Rock) 92.3, whose PPM ratings have dropped from a 2.0 in August ’08 to a 1.7 in December.
