Charlie Russell was a legend in El Paso, TX radio. He is being saluted throughout the city following his death Monday at age 73. He had suffered from prostate cancer.

All five Clear Channel stations in El Paso aired a 15-minute tribute to Russell on Tuesday morning. KHEY-AM & FM are collecting tributes to him on the stations’ website.

Although the New Mexico native came to El Paso as a rock ‘n’ roll KELP-AM in 1959, he was best known as a DJ and fan of Country, including 23 years hosting mornings on KHEY-AM. After leaving the air, he sold outdoor advertising and then returned to radio as an ad salesman. In all, Charlie Russell’s career in radio spanned nearly 60 years.

According to an obituary in the El Paso Times, local musicians are organizing a tribute concert to take place March 7th.
